The University of St Andrews opened its new Research Library on Monday 30 September 2013. The project involved the complete interior refurbishment of the former Martyrs’ Church, closed in 2008 and purchased by the University in 2011. The 40 desk reading room will be open to all members of the research postgraduate community and academic staff. The reading room also has a substantial consultation collection: this included the bulk of the University’s exceptional collection of reference works in the fields of bibliography and book history. A second reading room in the new research library, opening later in the autumn, will be designated for the consultation of rare books and archival material from the university’s Special Collections. To mark the opening of this exceptional new facility, the University will shortly announce a new Visiting Scholars’ Scholarship scheme for those wishing to make use of materials in our Special Collections. Details of the scheme will also be posted on this website.
